Florence Biennale

I have been invited to participate in the Florence Biennale, an International Exhibit held every two years in Florence, Italy. An artist friend of mine was in it in 2002 and I've always been envious. Oh...I've been to Florence, but to exhibit there...well! I leave November 21st and will return on December 19th. Needless to say, I am pretty excited.

Here is one of the three oversized oil paintings I will be shipping over. I just finished it today. It is called, "Saffron Skies" (for obvious reason). It is a sunset I embellished a bit on that I saw from my best friend's back yard. It is oil on panel -- 60"x 48". I don't like to work on a painting for more than a week (tops). This one took a couple of weeks. I am so ready to start something new!!

Returning to my first love

When I was nine, I started doing portraits of all of my friends and family members. By the time I was in high school my friends would pay me $10 to $25 to sketch a portrait of them or their boyfriend/girlfriend. I mostly did it because I loved the challenge. I can't look at a face without separating shapes and colors in my mind. I'm sure it is strange to have someone analyze your facial features and the shadows cast across your nose when having a conversation with me (sorry). But it is something I have done for as long as I can remember.
After taking a couple of decades off from portraits, I have come back to them. This is Natalie. She visited my studio one day and I was so struck by her exotic attire that I had to paint her. It is oil on canvas, 18" x 24".
